The Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily Graphic Shirt in the Running on Fumes colourway is one of those pieces that earns a second look — and then a conversation. The back graphic is a vintage-style cartoon of an evergreen tree, huffing exhaust as it charges up an alpine switchback beneath dark clouds, with the slogan “We’re Running on Fumes — Clean Air Action Now!” stamped boldly across it. It’s funny, it’s urgent, and it’s unmistakably Patagonia. The front keeps it clean: a minimalist arched “Patagonia Trail Running” logo in seafoam green across the left chest, and a woven Patagonia tab at the hem.

The graphic is part of Patagonia’s support for Running Up for Air (RUFA) — an annual endurance trail running challenge where athletes scale mountains to raise funds for grassroots organisations fighting air pollution. In Australia, that includes the Bob Brown Foundation and its work protecting Tasmania’s native forests. The slogan works as a double entendre: the physical exhaustion of pushing your limits on a mountain, and the very real warning that the planet’s atmosphere is running out of time. The retro 1970s counter-culture cartoon style — jagged switchbacks, thick-lined clouds, bubbly typography — is classic Patagonia Responsibili-Tee energy: lighthearted art, serious message.

Under the graphic, the shirt is a proper technical piece. The Capilene Cool fabric is quick-drying with a MiDori™ bioSoft plant-based wicking finish and HeiQ® Mint odour control. Set-in sleeves and flat-locked stitching minimise chafe under running vests and packs. The Float Blue X-Dye finish gives the base a subtle heathered depth rather than a flat colour.
